THE FRIENDS OF THE SOMERSET RURAL LIFE MUSEUM

The Friends of the Somerset Rural Life Museum have been busy, they have established a ‘Sewing Circle’ to help with storing the costumes. They have been making special coathangers which they needed to cover, and had an expert to show them how to stuff and cover the hangers. The group set about the task and they are now working their way towards providing hangers for the whole costumes collection. The Friends are actively involved in the Somerset Voices Project, recording local history for the oral Archive kept at the museum. Their magazine includes an account of one of the first recordings made in 1979. A strawberry grower in Cheddar recalled his working life, describing early farming methods and fruit varieties, the changes in packing and distribution and finally the decline of the industry in the face of imports from abroad.
