THE FRIENDS OF THE PITT RIVERS MUSEUM

The Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, celebrated a very special day on 30th May when the Dalai Lama launched the Museum’s ‘Tibet Album’ website. A large, colourful crowd waited to greet him and the front of the building was decorated with banners. The ‘Album’ shows the impressions of British visitors to Lhasa, some seventy years ago; the Dalai Lama commented on many of the images, identifying important personages who featured in some of the photographs. His Holiness drew attention to the Album’s role in spreading awareness of Tibet’s traditional culture of peace which, he said, in this turbulent age has as much importance and relevance as ever. His simple words on the profound truths and beliefs of Tibetan culture made a deep and lasting impression on all those fortunate enough to be there on that memorable day.
