SOUTH EAST - LONDON AND MIDDLESEX - MEETING 2007

The Women’s Library, part of the London Metropolitan University, at Aldgate East was the excellent venue for the meeting on 13th March 2007. The Library, behind the listed façade of the Old Wash Houses, has purpose-built conference facilities and houses an extensive archive dating from the Suffrage Movement, as well as more general feminist literature and archive.

The Director, Antonia Byatt, started the proceedings by telling us about the history, not only of the Library founded in 1926, but also of the building. She gave an interesting historical overview about the development of equality for women, both here and abroad. Dr Melinda Haunton, Senior Archives Advisor, spoke about ‘Understanding Archives’ - what they are, how to store them, the importance of access for research and then gave a very interesting account of the work done at the Public Records Office at Kew.

Virginia Mayes-Wright, the 2005 winner of the Robert Logan Award, spoke about the difference that winning the Robert Logan award has made to her life. She is a great advocate for museums and the excellent work they do. Since winning the award she has spoken at the BAFM Conference, Murex, the Aim Conference and also in Hungary Geoffrey Williams spoke about the work of BAFM during the last year and the challenges that lie ahead. He asked people to ensure that the BAFM Journal is distributed as widely as possible and copies left in the museum. BAFM is currently very concerned about the reduction of Local Authority funding in London to museums and galleries, due to money being diverted to the 2012 Olympics.

Co-ordinator: Gay Walker

Gay lives in Dulwich and has served on the Committee of the Friends of Dulwich Picture Gallery and was Chairman during the time of the refurbishment and the subsequent re-opening by her Majesty the Queen. She has therefore had experience of working closely with an independent Friends Group with a large and increasing membership, organising fund raising events, publishing the magazine and coping with the day to day running of the group. She trained at Trinity College of Music and spent much of her teaching life as Head of Music at a South London school. The BAFM London Region has a very diverse mix of groups, some with thousands of Friends and others with less than a hundred, and she endeavours to help them communicate with one another and learn from each other.
