THE BAFM ANNUAL AGM & CONFERENCE 2008
 
 
Penlee House, Penzance - 3rd to 5th October 2008
 
PROVISIONAL PROGRAMME

Friday 3rd October

1.00pm to 4.00pm
Choice of one of the following excursions:

A: St Ives Visiting Tate St Ives; Bernard Leach Pottery Museum; and Barbara Hepworth’s Studio and Garden.

B: Newlyn Walking tour of the fishing village and inspiration for the ‘Newlyn School’ artists (c. 1880-1930) including a guided tour of Penlee House and a copy of the book ‘Under the Open Sky’ by Catherine Wallace.

C: Lamorna Walking tour of this beautiful coastal valley including privileged access to several of the artists’ houses and studios.

D. St Michael’s Mount Guided tour of this beautiful house and island, owned by the St Aubyn family and now in the care of the National Trust. There are steep and rough paths up to the main house.

E: Mining Heritage The international importance of Cornwall’s hard-rock mining industry has been recognised through the designation of ‘World Heritage Site’. Visit Geevor Mine (including a tour underground) and Levant Mine.

F: Archaeological Heritage Visiting several sites of well-preserved remains of prehistoric people and their culture as well as still upstanding settlements inhabited before and during Roman times.

5.30pm to 7.30pm
Reception at Penlee House Gallery and Museum and a chance to see the current exhibition and many Newlyn School paintings.

8.00pm
Dinner at the Queen’s Hotel with keynote speech by Tim Smit, Chief Executive of the Eden Project and discoverer of the Lost Gardens of Heligan.

Saturday 4th October

9.30am to 10.00am
Registration and coffee at the Queen’s Hotel.

10.00am
Welcome by the Chair of the Friends of Penlee House Gallery and Museum.

10.05am
‘A Sense of Place: Defining the Theme’ Kate Brindley, Director of Bristol Museums, Galleries and Archive Services.

10.30am to 11.30am
Facilitated group discussions.

11.30am to 12.30pm
Feedback and open forum.

12.30pm
Buffet lunch at the Queen’s Hotel.

2.00pm
Keynote speech by Sir Neil Cossons, immediate past Chairman of English Heritage, followed by open forum and questions.

3.00pm
AGM chaired by BAFM President, Loyd Grossman OBE, FSA. BAFM Newsletter Awards Presentation of the 2009 BAFM Conference in Dublin.

4.10pm
Tea and biscuits

6.30pm
Coaches depart from the Queen’s Hotel for the Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro.

7.30pm
Gala Buffet at the Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro.

Sunday 5th October

9.30am to 1.00pm
Choice of one of the six excursions (see description for Friday 3rd October).

1.00pm
Farewell buffet lunch at the Queen’s Hotel, Penzance.
