THE BAFM NEWSLETTER AWARD ENTRY RULES

The annual awards are given for the best newsletters in two categories: those for groups with fewer than 500 members and those with 500 or over. Newsletters eligible to enter the competition are those published by fully paid-up members of BAFM during the year following the previous competition; groups may submit whichever of that year’s issues they please. NB: The two winning groups are not eligible to enter in the year following their success; runners-up are free to enter again in the next year. In addition, in deciding whether a newsletter is eligible, the panel of judges will wish to be satisfied that it actually is a newsletter and not just a vehicle for publishing learned articles or pieces of research. It should be produced and mainly funded by the Friends and not by the institution’s paid staff. Any sponsorship must be declared. There will be two first prizes of £250 and, in addition, prizes of £100 will be presented to two runners-up in each class.

In considering eligible newsletters, the judges will give marks for:

- interest and general readability;

- appearance, layout and use of illustrations;

- originality;

- information for members, including details of how to join and, of course, BAFM and WFFM. Topics and points of discussion and interest in the wider world of the Heritage sector avoid the pitfalls in a too parochial approach.

- contributions from ordinary members and input from more than one or two contributors; it should not be a publication just written by and for the committee.

A copy of the single issue being entered for the competition should be sent to the Newsletter Competition Organiser so that it arrives before 1st June 2011.

Joy Heffernan. The Garth, Commons Lane, Balderstone. BB2 7LL

It should be accompanied by the following information:

Name of group and number of members; Name of newsletter and number of issues per annum; Editor’s name and contact details, telephone and e-mail; Details of any assistance, financial or otherwise, from any other than Friends.

Winners and runners-up will be notified, by letter or e-mail from the Editor, at the beginning of August and prizes and certificates will be presented by the President at BAFM’s Annual Conference. Winners should notify the Conference Organiser of the name of the person who will be receiving the award. If they do not have a representative there, the relevant Area Co-ordinator will collect the award on their behalf and present it at one of the group’s meetings, on behalf of BAFM.
